Mother Nature's Warnings

The world is on the precipice of passing a number of crucial planetary tipping points, from the melting of polar ice sheets to rainforests turning into savannahs.


The recent UN Scientific Advisory Board Brief on Earth System Tipping Points detailed the threats facing the planet:


Earth system tipping points refer to critical thresholds within the Earthʼs air, water, land, and ice sub-systems. When external pressures, such as rising greenhouse gas concentrations, push these sub-systems across a critical threshold, they can undergo large, ongoing changes that fundamentally alter their structure and function. A tipping point refers to the threshold beyond which internal feedback mechanisms sustain continued change, even if the original cause is reduced or eliminated.


Experts note that tipping points may be difficult or impossible to reverse on human timescales and would have catastrophic impacts on humans and the planet.  In general, the probabilities of reaching tipping points rise significantly as global warming increases.



Goodbye to Coral Reefs?

Let’s look at just one tipping point – the die off of coral reefs, that are crucial to ocean health.


The most widespread and intense bleaching event ever documented began in 2023. NOAA determined this event likely concluded in mid-2025 following unprecedented heat stress across the world's coral reefs. During that stretch, bleaching-level heat stress hit 84% of the world's coral reef area across all three coral reef-containing ocean basins – Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian – with mass bleaching documented in at least 83 countries and territories.


This was the second global bleaching event in just the last 10 years. It is a sign of how much more frequently these events are now occurring compared to past bleachings. Even the most conservative projections suggest mass coral bleaching could become an annual occurrence on the majority of the world's reefs by 2050.


Root Cause

The driving cause is elevated ocean temperatures, exacerbated by anthropogenic climate change. Coral bleaching happens when heat-stressed corals expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues (which is what gives them color and much of their food energy) — leaving behind a white, starving skeleton. Prolonged or repeated heat stress pushes bleaching into outright mortality.


Repeated periods of extreme ocean heat stress (marine heatwaves) give reefs less time to recover, making it more likely they will shift from coral-rich ecosystems to algae-dominated or simpler ecosystems.

Irreversible Changes

The UN brief laid out in stark terms the result of inaction – “Earth system tipping points can trigger irreversible changes that cascade across the planet, creating long-term risks for ecosystems, societies, and future generations.”


The El Niño event will result in increased ocean temperatures that could bring a return to widespread coral bleaching.


Why isn’t the world taking action? The warnings about tipping points and human impacts on the planet have been around for decades.  Most people seem content to be blissfully ignorant of the crises facing us, or worse, willfully ignoring them all. We all need to demand the changes that will help keep Earth healthy and thriving.
