Climate Change, Research, And The Urgent Call To Save Uganda's Wildlife

The glaciers that have crowned these peaks for millennia ancient formations that have witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, the coming and going of countless species are retreating. Year by year, meter by meter, they are pulling back, leaving bare rock where ice once stood. Scientists are already calculating, with quiet urgency, how many years remain before they vanish entirely.
This is not a distant warning. This is Uganda's climate crisis, unfolding in real time, visible to the naked eye, and it is just one chapter in a much larger story of ecological disruption that is transforming the country's extraordinary biodiversity at a pace that is outrunning both conservation efforts and the research needed to guide them.
The evidence is everywhere, once you know where to look. The three-horned chameleon, once found in the lower forest zones of the Rwenzori, has retreated upward to higher, cooler altitudes as temperatures rise across its traditional range. Invasive plant species, opportunistic and aggressive, are exploiting the climate disruption to colonise habitats with alarming speed, crowding out the native vegetation that wildlife depends on for food and shelter.
Across Uganda's national parks, the distribution of animals is shifting, their movements becoming less predictable, their territories overlapping increasingly with human settlements as ecological boundaries blur.
John Makombo, Commissioner for Biodiversity Management at Uganda Wildlife Authority, describes research as the compass that makes sense of all this movement. "We have looked at the glacier recession, at what rate it is receding, and how many years we are likely to have before we lose the entire glacier," he says. "These are studies that have been done. And several others. Research is very key in providing management information to ensure we put interventions in place."
But here is the uncomfortable truth that Uganda's conservationists are confronting: research, however brilliant, is running against a tightening clock. Climate change does not pause for funding cycles. It does not wait while institutions negotiate mandates or while papers make their slow journey from field observation to published finding to management decision.
Dr. Carolina Asiimwe, Assistant Commissioner for Research and Ecological Monitoring at UWA, points to what she calls the "neglected taxa," the species whose populations may already be in freefall, undetected, because the baseline studies needed to track them simply have not been done. Without knowing where a species lives, how many exist, or how their numbers are trending, conservationists are essentially navigating blind. "Some numbers are disappearing, and we don't know," she warns, "because too little has been done to study them."
Climate change makes this knowledge gap not just frustrating but dangerous. As temperatures shift and habitats transform, once stable species may tip suddenly into crisis — and without the data to detect the early warning signs, the window for intervention may close before anyone realises it has opened.
The response, conservationists agree, cannot come from any single institution. It demands mobilisation of researchers, government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions, local communities, and international partners working in concert rather than in isolation.
Dr. Emmanuel Akampurira of Uganda Wildlife Research and Training College frames it as an existential choice between collaboration and irrelevance. "Biodiversity conservation and the challenges of biodiversity conservation cannot be handled by one organisation alone," he says plainly. "It takes a concerted effort." His institution, mandated by an Act of Parliament to drive Uganda's wildlife research agenda, is actively building coalitions, pooling limited financial resources, combining specialist skills, and creating platforms where findings are shared, gaps are identified, and action plans are built collectively.
The call to action from Uganda's conservation leaders is unified and unambiguous. Researchers must move faster to translate findings into decisions. Policymakers must prioritise wildlife science in national budgets rather than treating it as a dispensable line item. NGOs and international partners must direct climate-focused conservation funding to the specific knowledge gaps that are leaving Uganda's biodiversity most exposed. And communities the people living alongside these animals, navigating the same climate disruptions daily must be brought into the research process as partners, not afterthoughts.

Because ultimately, what the glaciers of the Rwenzori are telling us, what the retreating chameleon and the shifting elephant herds and the encroaching invasive plants are all telling us, is that the time for cautious, incremental responses has passed.
The clock is melting. And the only answer is to act, together, now.
